South Moreton Boxing Club’s “St Valentine’s Day Massacre” event, held on February 15, 2025, successfully raised money and awareness for The Cornermen, a men’s mental health charity. The highly anticipated match between Danny Heap from Spartans Gym in Chippenham and the undefeated John Stopher was a highlight of the evening.
The Fight
As the crowd chanted Stopher’s name, both fighters entered the ring, known for their aggressive styles. The first round saw a respectful exchange, with both boxers carefully picking their shots.
In the second round, Heap and Stopher touched gloves before unleashing a flurry of punches. They attempted big hooks from range but found more success with straight punches, showcasing their skill and technique.
The third round began with another show of respect through a glove touch, followed by an all-out war. Stopher landed powerful straight combinations that momentarily wobbled Heap, who quickly recovered and retaliated. Heap’s corner advised him to work more off the jab, which proved effective in scoring and maintaining distance.
As the fourth round commenced, fatigue began to show, but both fighters remained determined. Stopher’s shots appeared to have more visual impact, despite sporting a bleeding nose.
The final round was a crowd-pleaser, with both boxers going for power punches and planting their feet. After the bell, Heap and Stopher embraced, acknowledging the close nature of the fight.
The Decision and Aftermath
John Stopher emerged victorious by unanimous decision, maintaining his undefeated record. In the post-fight interview, Stopher praised Heap’s resilience, saying, “I hit Heap with some decent shots, but he just kept coming forward and returned some good shots too.” When asked about potential future opponents, Stopher remarked, “I don’t know, I’ve been out for 18 months and thoroughly enjoyed being back.”
Stopher expressed gratitude for his supporters, particularly enjoying his personal chant. He also showed appreciation for The Cornermen charity and their important work in men’s mental health.
The event, by South Moreton Boxing Club, successfully combined exciting boxing action with raising awareness for an important cause, making it a memorable night for all involved.
